MP3hursday – New-ish Music edition

February 7, 2008

What I typed at the start: “Here’s a buncha songs that I’ve heard lately:” and left it at that.

But, in retrospect, you all deserve a little more than ‘that’. A lot of these songs I’ve heard on Indie 103.1FM lately (and played so much that I’m a bit sick of them) or heard in commercials or are floating around the interweb.

In particular, the Moldy Peaches song is from the ‘Juno’ soundtrack and the Arctic Monkeys was used in the brawl between Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert and John Stewart – Kinda gave me a new appreciation for it.

Kate Nash – Foundations.mp3

Adele – Chasing Pavements.mp3

Busdriver – Casting Agents & Cowgirls

Hot Chip – Ready For The Floor

Sia – Lentil

The Black Lips – Veni Vidi Vici

Yael Naïm – New Soul

Blonde Redhead – 23

Arctic Monkeys -Brainstorm

Battles – Atlas

The Moldy Peaches – Anyone Else But You

Born Ruffians – Hummingbird

Iron & Wine – Boy with a Coin

Vampire Weekend – A-Punk

DJ Lobsterdust – Jenny’s Superstitious (mashup of Stevie Wonder and The Killers)

MP3hursday – New-ish Music.zip (64MB)

Mo and I are heading to a private Aimee Mann show tonight. Jealous? …No? Suck it.

MP3hursday – The Bobs edition

January 11, 2008

A lenghty preface this’ll turn out to be, methinks… Here goes:

On the longish car rides to the Michigan Renaissance Festival in 1992 friend, Mike Ameloot, would share music theory and history with me – knowing full well that I planned on becoming a music major in a couple of years. He also was an a cappella fanatic. He introduced me to bunches of a capella groups like Rockapella, The Nylons and Manhattan Transfer – but one stuck with me: The Bobs.

The Bobs are pretty quirky – Born out of the 1980s they mix jazz, rock and (sometimes) avante garde asthetics to their tunes. They became semi-famous for their version of Hendrix’s ‘Purple Haze’ for a little while and always write their songs with tongue firmly planted in-cheek. They might not be for everyone (heck, I still find myself apologizing here and there for them) but they’re always fun.

Though they have a bit of a revolving cast, The Bobs are still around – They were just included on the bill of a small Christmas tour that Harry Shearer and his wife, Judith Owen, did. Below are some of their (in my humble opinion) best tunes – If you only download one, make it ‘Spontaneous Human Combustion’.

Helmet
Mopping, Mopping, Mopping
Banana Love
Little Red Riding Hood (live)
Spontaneous Human Combustion
Mr. Duality
Rainbird
Slow Down Krishna
Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)
You Really Got A Hold On Me (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)
White Room (Cream)
Particle Man (They Might Be Giants)
There Is A Mountain (Donovan)
Disco Inferno (The Trammps)
Killer Bees

Updates and nuptual information

January 7, 2008

So, I’ve been getting a lot of messages wanting to know about wedding details…  Here’s what we’ve got so far:

-The ceremony and [proper] reception will be in Michigan since both of our families are out there.
-We’re trying for September 21st, 2008.  We’ll see if that happens.
-We’re also trying to keep the budget mega-low.  Therefore, it’ll be a smallish wedding for family and close friends – Don’t be offended if you don’t get a proper invite…  It’s simply a matter of practicality and resources.  We still love you.
-We’re looking to hold a Los Angeles reception after we get back from Michigan.  We’d like to celebrate with our west coast friends but don’t want anyone to drag themselves to Michigan with airfare running $200-$300, hotels and the like  …plus, it’s Michigan.
-I will be shaving for the ceremony.

In JOT happenings, Stephen (front-and-center in the picture below) gets back from wherever he was for November and December next week.  We’re working on eight (!) new songs (with a handful of germs of ideas for other songs here and there) and they’re all leaning towards a more ‘rockin” sound – I think we all have some aggression to get out…  Also, we’re looking into booking new gigs all over the place (within reason), conducting interviews (one for ClearChannel Magazine will appear in the next month or two) and talking about shooting a concert video…

Hope everyone’s happy and healthy – I think I am.

End of the year survey

January 2, 2008

1. What did you do in 2007 that you’d never done before?
Proposed to a girl that said ‘yes’; ate okra that I actually liked (thanks to Eric’s mom); toured with a rock band; shot a music video; been ‘off continent’; jumped rope,

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No, and no.  I’m perfekt.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not this year.  Last year was a doozy, though…

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not this year.  Next year will be a doozy, though…

5. What countries did you visit?
Mexico…  Japan was supposed to be in there, but, well…  Y’know…

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Increased productivity with the band; more “get up and go”; closer and more frequent contact with friends and family members; a wedding.

7. What dates from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
April 28th – John Mayer’s blog about JOT; Dec 25th – Popping the question.  Hmm.  Lots happened but, apparently, on no specific dates.  I mean, I guess, every day in Phil World is eventful in it’s own way.

Except for yesterday.  I did absolutely nothing yesterday.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Not strangling anyone like I did in 2006.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not strangling anyone like I did in 2006.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Man, was my back hurting after wrestling with Yazoo the pit bull at Maureen’s parent’s place on Christmas day.  That and the weird foot injury that I suffered when training for that half-marathon in February.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
iPhone.  iPhone.  iPhone.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Stephen, Bryan and Eric putting up with my neurosis for the first week of tour.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Britney’s.  And, therefore, our nation’s.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, methinks.  After that, hookers.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The girl saying ‘yes’; seeing friends I hadn’t seen in over a decade; the promise of the future of something that I really believe in – Just Off Turner.

16. What song will always remind you of 2007?
“D.A.N.C.E.” by Justice.  Not that I like it a whole lot but that it sticks in your head like a bee stinger in your arm.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
 a) happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c) richer or poorer?
Happier, fatter and richer now that I stopped going out to eat for every meal.  Unfortunately, I miss going out for every meal – I think that’ll be my resolution…  To go out every meal.

I got bored with typing this answer about midway through – Could you tell?

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Writing songs; exercise; traveling.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Whining.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Christmas Eve with my family – stuffing ourselves silly.  Christmas Day with Maureen’s family – Placing a ring on her finger, throwing my back out and watching Jerry play Guitar Hero.  Then, later, stuffing myself silly with some amazing, homemade Italian food.

21. Did you fall in love in 2007?
A little more every time I looked at her.

22. What was your favorite TV program?
Haven’t you heard?  It was LOST!  Dammit, watch it, people.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I make it a point not to hate anyone.  But I’m really disappointed in a few people.

24. What was the best book you read?
Charlie Huston’s ‘Henry Thompson’ trilogy had me by the balls for a month there.  It’s certainly a three-way tie.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Kooks; Matt Miller; Spoon.

26. What did you want and get?
A laptop; iPhone; engaged.

27. What did you want and not get?
Famous-er.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
‘No Country For Old Men’ was so freaking close.  ‘The Simpsons Movie’ is up there – Newstalgic overtones for me.

29. What did you do on your birthday?
I got older.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
It was pretty great altogether but I guess it’d have to be:  Securing the future and success of JOT.  That’s one string left untied…

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Tried to work with a stylist in January.  That lasted all of three shows and a photoshoot.  It ended up ‘casual classy’.  I think I’m going to run with that concept for 2008.

32. What kept you sane?
Making music – I’ve got that same itch right now.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Paul Rudd.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
Politics make me tired.  And worried.

35. Who did you miss?
Radiohead in concert.  Next year, guys – I promise.

36. Who was the best new person you met?
New person?  Jeez, I dunno.  I re-met a lot of old people – Does that count?

Um, how about Bryan and Eric’s parents?  Oh, and T.K. is pretty funny.
37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007.
Eggs in baskets shouldn’t be counted before they’re hatched.

…That’s a metaphor that I just made up.  Did you like it?
38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
“This place is like a Ghost Town”

Wedding songs – Your input, please

December 31, 2007

Happy New Year, everybody -

If y’all haven’t heard, Maureen and I are getting married (hopefully, later this year) and we’re building our own playlist for the reception.  We’d like to get your top five songs that you’d like to dance to at a wedding.  Slow, fast or somewhere in-between…

We’ve got our favorites but we’d like to hear yours.

Love to you all & safe and happy holidays,

Phil & Maureen

The Best of 2007

December 28, 2007

I briefly considered posting my Worst of 2007 Phlog first, but the spirit of the holidays got the better of me.  Here’s my (admittedly superficial) best of the past year:

10. Green tea – Good for you and it’s not coffee.  However, I’m having a hard time actually enjoying the taste of it – Give me time.

 9. The iPhone – Holy crap.  The ‘Messiah Phone’, indeed.  I’m sorry that my old one died but my new one is freakin’ sweet.  I couldn’t have visited all the friends and family in Michigan this past week without it (or a decent GPS but whatever…).

 8. Lost – Continually kicks ass and ups the ante for the art (?) of network television medium.  I simply cannot wait for season four to start on January 31, 2008.

 7. Oxygen – I’m addicted.  I can’t get enough of it…  I think I need an intervention.  I hear it’s a gateway to water abuse.

 6. My beard – Lazy?  Sometimes.  Busy?  Often.  Not shaving makes me look artsy.  The full beard that I’m sporting right now is much more convenient than shaving.  I don’t think I’ve had a baby-butt smooth face since August.

 5.  Radiohead – For turning the music industry on its ear, if only for a minute; by releasing their (brilliant) album ‘In Rainbows’ exclusively through their own website.  Reaction was so strong that radiohead.com slowed to a crawl on its release on October 10th with customers naming their own price for the album.  Since the stunt, some labels have dismissed the event as a singularity and claim that this platform would never work for 99% of the artists and albums put on the market.  We’ll see…

 4. John Mayer – By actually listening to ‘How Much It Hurts’ and writing a blog that maybe took him (maybe) two minutes he introduced thousands of people to Just Off Turner.  I’ll stay positive and optimistic about what the future holds for JOT…  Thanks, John.

 3. Friends – I’ve been extremely lucky to have been introduced to some terrific people in Los Angeles, retain life-long friendships with amazing human beings in Michigan, New York, Chicago, Atlanta and New Hampshire and reconnect with high school friends.  I was a bit of a loner for a while but this is better, by far.

 2. Family – I neglected the fam’ for the last two year’s lists.  Not this year.  The less I see them, the more I cherish them.  Mom, Dad, Mike, Donna, Linda, Nick, Ty, Trevor and Mina – Every day I’m in LA is bittersweet because I’m not home.

 1. Proposing to the girl of my dreams, my soulmate, the reason I wake up in the morning and come home at night:  Maureen.  Pre-ception in Los Angeles – real deal in Michigan.  Late September?
